Football Season Review

№4: Servette

Despite returning to the top flight after a lengthy absence, Servette were not expected to have anything to do with relegation and they have justified such predictions. They played well without getting the results early in the season, but their results eventually started to match their performances and they got themselves in the battle for Europe, where they spent the remainder of the campaign. Key man Sebastien Wuthrich was frozen out of the squad in the second half of the campaign due to refusing to sign a new contract, but Miroslav Stevanovic stepped up to provide the creativity. The Genevans eventually did slow down - it came after the pandemic-caused break, when their number of injured players was simply too large to overcome. While this has made it impossible for them to challenge Basel for third, they still had a sizeable lead over the remainder of the league and deservedly managed to finish fourth. While particularly pronounced early in the season, their problem with turning performances into goals never really went away. If they manage to strengthen the strike force during the summer, they could even aim for a higher finish next season.
