Union Berlin enjoyed an excellent debut campaign in the Bundesliga as they finished in a respectable mid-table position thanks to some gritty defensive displays.
With pre-season expectations of finishing in the bottom two, Berlin began the campaign on a poor note losing five of their opening seven games. Form though quickly improved with impressive victories against city rivals Hertha Berlin and Borussia Monchengladbach.
Berlin did struggle to hit a consistent run of form, especially midway through the campaign, but a return of 10 points from their final five games ensured that Berlin secured their safety from relegation with games to spare.
Key to their survival were some crucial goals by Sebastian Andersson who ended the campaign as the top scorer with 12 goals while Christopher Trimmel was arguably their most consistent player and the rightback led the assists charts to match some good defensive displays.
While Berlin have exceeded expectations this season, they will need to bring in reinforcements, especially in the center of the defense, while first choice keeper Rafal Gikiewicz is also expected to leave the club, if they are to ensure another comfortable campaign next season.
