Football Season Review

№24: Yeovil Town

It was a desperate season for Yeovil Town which ended in relegation from the Football League. The early promise of Darren Way’s reign as manager had long since disappeared and there was bemusement and anger when he signed a contract extension in November. By that stage the side were sliding down the table following a promising start to the campaign. He lost loan winger Diallang Jaiyesimi to a season-ending knee injury after just nine games and defender Omar Sowunmi missed four months with an ankle injury. Way chopped and changed his side as he searched in vain for an answer. He was eventually sacked at the end of March following a miserable run of just four victories from 23 league games. The club was in the midst of a takeover by that stage and interim manager Neale Marmon had little chance of guiding the side to safety. He failed to win any of his seven games in charge and relegation was confirmed on the penultimate weekend of the season. They finished bottom of the table, ending a 16-year stay in the Football League. The Glovers were the second lowest scorers in the division with 41 goals. Striker Alex Fisher finished as leading scorer with 8 goals. Tom James, who played most of the season in defence, notched seven goals and is far too good to be playing in non-league football. A tough summer awaits the club after a dreadful season.
