Another successful season for Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership saw them claim second place for the fourth year in a row, the first time in their history they have claimed four successive top two finishes.
Their result last year meant they went into the Europa League qualifiers, but despite beating Apollon in the first leg at Pittodrie they were outclassed in Cyprus and fell out at the first possible opportunity.
Four wins in a row in the league had their fans dreaming of success and they went the opening nine games unbeaten until they were hammered at home by champions Celtic. When this was followed by back to back defeats against Rangers, it showed once more that Derek McInnes’s side lack the cutting edge or bit of quality to beat the biggest sides in the league and go for the title.
Much of Aberdeen’s success is measured by how well they do in the cups however and this was not their year. Two defeats to Motherwell saw them knocked out of both cups before the final meaning another trophyless season for Derek McInnes’s men.
They ended the season on a high and gave some hope to their fans that they can go the extra step next year as the claimed a draw against Rangers and beat Celtic in the last two games. They’ll have to do it without star man Kenny McLean however who has joined Norwich, while Ryan Christie has spent the last two years on loan from Celtic and may not get a third season at Pittodrie.
