Football Season Review

№8: Almere City FC

Almere City entered Dutch professional football back in 2005 and the 19th spot in their first season showed that there was some work to do to close the gap with the top ten in the Jupiler League. This relatively small club entered that top ten in 2015 however and they recorded their best result in club's history last year when they finished eighth. Manager Jack de Gier faced a tough mission this year to repeat that outcome, but Almere City showed the qualities once again as some young players made a name for themselves. The Almere side was even in the race for a top five classification near the end of the regular campaign, but they eventually finished eighth again, which is a more than decent achievement for this club. Almere City was in fact the favourite to win the first play-off round against Helmond Sport, but the 6-2 defeat on aggregate ended their season. De Gier formed a team with youngsters again, which has been the case for the last years as the best players always leave this club during the Summer break. This awarded some young players to show their class though, which was exactly what they did. Team captain Tom Overtoom, centre-back Damon Mirani and winger Soufyan Ahannach especially showed their potential and they could leave Almere City again during the Summer. Ahannach was in fact one of the best players in the Jupiler League this season as he pushed the performances to a higher level with his creativity, assists and goals. Almere City will have to start over again next season as some key players are set to leave the club, but the steady management already showed that this club is capable of replacing the best players with decent ones with potential. Almere City finished in the top half of the table for the third year in succession, which is in fact a great achievement for this relatively new club in Dutch professional football.
