RKC Waalwijk was an Eredivisie club between 1988 and 2007, but the team from Waalwijk failed to impress after that year, which resulted in three relegations in the space of seven years. The drop to the Jupiler League in 2014 hit the club extremely hard as they failed to form a quality side the year after, which resulted in a devastating 20th spot in 2015. 2016 wasn't that impressive as well as RKC Waalwijk finished 18th, but the 2016-2017 campaign finally showed some of the potential again. Peter van den Berg produced a decent campaign with his team, which eventually resulted in a ticket for the play-offs on the last day of the regular season. The Waalwijk side didn't push for promotion though as a big defeat at home against FC Emmen (1-5) immediately destroyed the dream.
RKC Waalwijk's squad contained experienced former Eredivisie players like Evander Sno, Johan Voskamp, Serginho Greene and Fred Benson, but this side somehow failed to push for a top five classification this year. The financial problems affected the atmosphere in the Mandemakers Stadium as well. The club came close to losing the professional license due to their mismanagement, but it all ended with a positive result as RKC Waalwijk will enter the Jupiler League again next year. Van den Berg produced a decent run with his side, especially with the last two years in mind, but the fans will expect more next season. This isn't an easy mission at all however as the budget won't be there to compete with bigger clubs, despite the impressive history.
The Waalwijk squad contained experience as mentioned before, but taking things to the next level will be a tough task now. RKC will announce play-off ambitions at the start of next season again, but they will have to dig deep to repeat this year's result.
