FC Eindhoven played in the Eredivisie in 1976 and 1977, but they have been a regular side in the Jupiler League ever since. The Eindhoven club failed to record top ten classifications for most of the time, but the new management definitely created some opportunities in the Jan Louwers Stadium in recent years. The recent campaigns (third in 2012, second in 2015 and fourth in 2016) even brought this club close to the Eredivisie, but taking that last step remained a bridge too far. These campaigns resulted in confidence for the 2016-2017 season, especially when well known manager and former FC Eindhoven player Ricardo Moniz joined the club, but FC Eindhoven somehow failed to show their full potential throughout the season.
Moniz formed an attacking 4-2-4 formation in most games, which resulted in some spectacular matches, but the lack of consistency remained a factor as well. The Eindhoven side was able to win against every opponent, but they recorded surprising defeats against teams like Achilles '29 and Jong FC Utrecht as well. The Eindhoven side still had the chance to claim a play-off spot on the last day of the season though in a mouth-watering derby game against Helmond Sport at home, but it all went horribly wrong near the end. The Eindhoven team wasted way too many chances and Helmond Sport eventually punished them by producing a late equalizer, which ended Eindhoven's season.
The Eindhoven staff will have to start over now. Some quality players like Dario van den Buijs already left the club and Moniz left the Jan Louwers Stadium as well. Some relatively unknown players will join FC Eindhoven again during the summer and bouncing back with a better finishing spot will be the main mission from now on. This won't be an easy task though and the new manager will have to perform from day one on to push for the play-offs.
