MVV Maastricht are still a club with potential in The Netherlands, but the recent years didn't satisfy the fans at all. The Maastricht side relegated back to the Jupiler League in 2000 and they have been struggling ever since, as they only managed to claim two top five spots in the space of seventeen years. The expectations weren't that high with that in mind at the start of the new campaign, but Ron Elsen's outfit did produce an impressive season to be honest as they had the chance to claim the Eredivisie spot on the very last day of the campaign.
MVV Maastricht's first half of the campaign especially was impressive. Elsen's men claimed the first spot after fifteen matches, which was rather surprising, but they failed to keep up with teams like VVV-Venlo and Jong Ajax later on. The lack of form became a factor during the final weeks of the season as MVV Maastricht failed to record a win in the last eight games, but their seventh spot was still good enough to enter the play-offs.
MVV Maastricht was one of the underdogs however due to that lack of form, but Elsen's men clearly had saved the best for last. A shocking win over SC Cambuur in the semi-final resulted in a mouth-watering derby against Eredivisie side Roda JC Kerkrade. The 0-0 draw at home was actually a decent result, but MVV Maastricht eventually failed to claim promotion as they recorded a narrow 1-0 defeat in the last match of the season. The overall campaign was quite decent though and the confidence will be back for the next campaign as a result.
