Bielefeld swept aside all before them to produce a memorable season. They were promoted up to the Bundesliga for the first time since 2009, eventually winning the Championship by 10 points.
A top six finish was the most people had expected of them before the campaign started but under the guidance of coach Uwe Neuhaus the belief grew. They only lost twice all season and, although there were as many as 14 draws overall, they were predominantly difficult to beat.
Influential attackers Fabian Klos and Andreas Voglsammer were yet again key up front, the latter finishing as top goalscorer in the division with 21 goals. The injury of Voglsammer in January could have been a problem but the likes of Cebio Soukou, Reinhold Yabo and Jonathan Clauss all stepped up to the plate with crucial goals.
It wasn’t just going forward that was the key to their success, defensively they were organised and solid, especially at home where they conceded just 12 times.
The winter and then Covid-break threatened to disrupt their momentum, but both times they continued where they had left off, performances did drop slightly in May but they were always in control.
It remains to be seen if Bielefeld can hold their own in the Bundesliga next season, it will of course be difficult but, if they can keep together the core of the team and add a few new faces, there is no reason why not.
