Football Season Review

№17: SV Wehen Wiesbaden

Wehen Wiesbaden put up a brave fight in their quest for survival but ultimately fell short. They produced some good results and performances at times but let too many goals in at the back. It looked as if it could be a long season for Wehen early on, they struggled with the step up in quality from Liga 3 and lost 6 of their first 7 games. After conceding a whopping 23 goals in those first 7 matches coach Rudiger Rehm changed his tactics to a more defence minded approach, using the counter-attack to their advantage. This had the desired effect and after a great victory at Stuttgart their confidence grew. They would briefly get out of the relegation zone in early February but results would falter once more and although improvements had been made defensively they lacked that little bit of quality to see games out. Six defeats from their final 9 games after the pandemic would eventually see them relegated. Striker Manuel Schaffler was the standout performer and scored 19 goals overall and it’s unlikely they will be able to keep hold of him next season. As far as next season is concerned Wehen have the capabilities of bouncing straight back up, it’s easier said than done of course but if they can keep the core of their squad and manager Rudiger Rehm they have every chance.
