Bologna's season was already a rather troublesome one even before the actual beginning of the Serie A. In fact, the club was facing some serious financial troubles and coach Colomba was given the sack and replaced by Malesani quite out of the blue. Despite all these problems and the points subtracted because of the financial problems, the team, a rather young and renewed one, succeeded offering several positive performances and was never really involved in the struggle to avoid relegation. Actually, at some stage, that is at the end of March, they seemed to be heading for something more than a mere safety. Then, the troubles began. Once they felt completely safe, Bologna started losing. And they started falling down the table, unstoppably. After five defeats in a row, their situation seemed to be tragic. However, they eventually managed to stop such an incredible haemorrhage before it got too late, thus achieving safety. And considering the way things had gone during the season, this was certainly an impressive result. Malesani succeeded giving the team a tactical ductility that turned out to be useful especially when having to face some top teams. Di Vaio confirmed himself as the heart and soul of the team and the top scorer with nineteen goals scored. His partners in the attack, Gimenez Meggiorini and Paponi, were far from outstanding. Mudingayi was a real wall in the midfield while Ekdal and Ramirez, in particular, seemed to be the main surprises of the season. Khrin failed making the quantum leap expected, injuring himself and spending more time in the stands than on the pitch.
