When they started their season, Chievo Verona were considered to be one of the candidate for the struggle to avoid relegation. After all, the squad had been only partly changed during the transfer season and no big names had been signed in and the new coach Pioli, who had taken Di Carlo's place, was far from an expert in the top flight, having been sacked when he was in charge of Parma in 2007. Despite such premises, Chievo Verona offered a rather brilliant football and for the first half of the season were steadily in the top ten of the Serie A. Curiously enough, Chievo Verona played better when opposed to some top teams while they had a tougher life with those struggling for safety. From December on, Chievo Verona suddenly became unable to win and started falling constantly. With only a few more games to play, they happened to be too close to the danger zone but, rather than losing their mind, they succeeded winning again and reaching a brilliant eleven standing in the table. A better result than the ones obtained by Di Carlo in the previous two seasons. Captain Pellissier was once again fundamental for the team with his goals, that were always decisive. His partners in the attack, Moscardelli, Granoche, Thereau and Uribe all together scored less than he did. Constant and Fernandes were the new names of the midfield who attracted the interest of several top teams, while Andreolli, Cesar and Mantovani did a great job right in front of always-attentive Sorrentino.
