The arrival of a new coach, Mihajlovic, who had done wonders in Catania, and the confirm of all the top players seemed to be granting Fiorentina a season in the top standings. After all, in the previous season, they had obtained an excellent result in the Champions League, reaching the quarterfinals of the competition. Jovetic's injury in August and Mutu's ban immediately depleted the squad offensively, though. And Frey's serious injury was another big blow for Mihajlovic. Thus, just until the Christmas break, Fiorentina were far from brilliant and they always seemed to be surviving in the wrong half of the table. Sometimes, too dangerously close to the relegation zone. Things certainly started to get better from January on. In fact, Fiorentina became somehow more solid and they turned into some tough opponents for all the other teams. Unfortunately for them, though, the gap from the top teams was far too wide and thus Fiorentina never really had the chance to compete for a place in the European competitions. However, during the last couple of months before the end of the season, they succeeded offering some good football and obtaining some extremely positive results, such as the 5-2 win against Udinese. Mutu, with his whims, and D'Agostino, who sat mostly on the bench, were undoubtedly two of the most negative surprises of the season. On the other hand, Boruc excellently replaced Frey while Cerci started reaching an outstanding form in the last couple of months.
