Football Season Review

№2: Clyde

Clyde enjoyed a remarkable season which ended in promotion to League One after beating Annan Athletic in a two-legged play-off final. The Bully Wee have spent nine seasons in the bottom tier of the Scottish Football League but went into this campaign with renewed optimism under manager Danny Lennon. He built one of the strongest squads in the division and they enjoyed a relatively injury-free season which meant they were able to put in some consistent performances. They ran Peterhead close for the title, taking it to the final day of the season but ultimately finished five points behind their rivals. It might have been a different story had they not suffered the crushing blow of being deducted four points in March for fielding an ineligible player in two league matches a month before. They showed plenty of character to overcome that huge disappointment and comfortably saw off Edinburgh City in the play-off semi-finals. They were made to fight all the way by the in-form Annan Athletic in the final, overturning a 1-0 first leg deficit to win 2-0 in the second leg at the Broadwood Stadium. Lennon relied on a strong spine which included goalkeeper Blair Currie and midfielder Ray Grant, who were both ever-present. Defender Martin McNiff was a real leader whilst striker David Goodwillie finished as leading goalscorer again with 22 goals. It was the versatile Barry Cuddihy who was voted player of the season, with Lennon having successfully converted him from central midfield to right back.
