Football Season Review

№6: Cowdenbeath

It was a season of much-needed stability for the Blue Brazil as experienced manager Gary Bollan guided them to a 6th place finish. They have won successive relegation play-offs to rescue their Football League status, the second coming under the guidance of Bollan, who put together a squad which was balanced between experience and youth. Concerns of another bottom of the table finish following a slow start to the season were soon banished and there was even a brief flirtation with the play-offs. A lack of consistency soon put paid to that but in some ways a season of consolidation was probably what the club needed. The high point was an F.A. Cup fourth round home tie with Glasgow giants Rangers and they put in decent showing; losing 3-1 in front of over 4,000 at Central Park. Defender Fraser Mullen was a mainstay of the side, missing just a single league game all season, whilst David McGurn was outstanding between the sticks again. Striker David Cox led the line well, finishing as leading scorer with 13 goals, and was voted player of the season. Cowdenbeath now have a solid base to build upon for next season and with a couple of shrewd additions, there’s no reason why they can’t make a concerted challenge for the play-offs.
