Football Season Review

№17: Eintracht Braunschweig

Eintracht failed to establish in the division after the promotion in 2019/20, with the Lions losing it all in the last few rounds when they simply collapsed psychologically. Short time between the seasons prevented Eintracht to strengthen their squad properly after the achieved promotion and on top of that the one big summer arrival Abdullahi got injured as early as round 3 and then it was late January before he was used from the off again. Things looked difficult from the start with 3 defeats in the first 5 rounds exposing lots of defensive issues. The away form was very poor too with Eintracht’s only away win all season coming in April (round 28). As a result despite 3 home wins in the early rounds come January the Lions were in the bottom 2. January proved crucial month with centre-backs Diakhite and Behrendt + striker Ji all brought into the squad and especially the first 2 had immediate impact. Eintracht kept single clean sheet in the first 14 rounds, but in the first 15 games with Diakhite and Behrendt in the squad they secured 9 shut downs and the points accumulated saw them jumping out of the bottom 3 with just 5 games left to play. However, this was when Behrendt got injured and in his absence the team conceded 2 goals or more in all of the last 5 rounds on way to earning single point from those games. This clearly wasn’t enough and despite fighting all the way until the final day in the end the Lions got relegated. Back in Bundesliga 3 Eintracht are expected to look for new coach and also they might see many players leaving them too.
