Football Season Review

№18: Wurzburger Kickers

Wurzburger Kickers were relegated back into Liga 3 at the first time of asking, after a struggling campaign which saw them finish 6 points adrift at the bottom. It was a troubled start to the campaign for Wurzburger on and off the pitch, after two defeats from their opening two games, coach Michael Schiele was shown the door and replaced by Marco Antwerpen.  They only managed to pick up a point in the proceeding 5 games and Antwerpen was swiftly dismissed. Bernhard Trares became the third manager appointed with not even two months of the season played. Trares fared better than his previous two counterparts but results still suffered. There were impressive wins against Hannover and Hamburger but they still lost the majority of games and would only leave the bottom of the table once the whole season. The club brought in lots of reinforcements in January in a bid to turn things around. Feltscher and Strohdiek helped to make them stronger defensively, while Pieringer, brought in on loan from Freiburg, was a hit up front with 6 goals and 2 assists. Striker Ridge Munsy also had his moments and finished top scorer with 7 goals.  In early April, Trares was the next man to lose his job, with Ralf Santelli taking over until the end of the season. It was all a little desperate by this point and, although Wurzburger gave everything in the final 9 games under Santelli, their fate was already determined. You have to feel a little sorry for Wurzburger, not to have the support of the fans in only their second season ever in the second-tier. They will hope to rebuild in the summer and focus on getting back up next term.
