Football Season Review

№14: Jahn Regensburg

Jahn Regensburg secured their status in the division on the final day after a largely underwhelming season. They did enjoy a decent cup run but were mainly disappointing in the league.  Jahn, under long-term coach Selimbegovic, got off to a decent start to the season, going undefeated in their first 5 games.  Inconsistency, as it did the previous campaign, soon set in and Jahn failed to win any more than 2 in a row the whole season.  Another problem was their lack of goals, striker Albers struggled with form until the latter part of the campaign, while Otto, brought in on loan from Hoffenheim, failed to make an impact. The highlight of the season was their historic cup run, which saw them reach the Quarter-finals for the first time in their history, eventually narrowly losing out to Werder Bremen.  Goalkeeper Meyer was a consistent performer throughout, making some crucial saves during the campaign, most notably in the penalty shootout victories against Kaiserslautern, Wiesbaden and Koln.  You always felt Regensburg had enough about them to beat the drop but results towards the end of the season left them needing at least a point in the final game against St.Pauli. They went on to win comfortably 3-0 and will remain in the second-tier next term. Jahn are in need of a face-lift over the close-season as things have fallen a little stale, some new recruits are certainly needed otherwise they could again struggle.
