Eintracht Frankfurt emerged as the surprise package of the season with the newly promoted side securing their best ever finish in the Bundesliga in nearly two decades after returning back to the top division of German football. Frankfurt had a great start to the season, winning five of their opening six games and the only time they dropped points was against defending champions Borussia Dortmund. While coach Armin Veh maintained that survival in the league was his immediate priority, Frankfurt spent much of the first half of the season in the Champions League qualification spots. Frankfurt's excellent run in the first half of the season was helped by the goal scoring form of Alexander Meier who scored 12 goals from the midfield. However a dip in form soon after the winter break, a run that included just one win in nine games, saw Frankfurt drop out of the top four for the first time since the opening day of the season. The Eagles struggled for goals in the second half of the season and though Veh managed to sign a striker in Srdjan Lakic during the winter transfer window, the Croatian forward failed to provide the goals on a consistent basis. An unbeaten run of five games at the end, including crucial victories over Schalke and Fortuna Dusseldorf, saw Frankfurt hold on to their in the top six and secure qualification to Europe for the first time since the 2006-07 season. Veh will be hoping that the club will use the opportunity and provide funds to strengthen the team during summer with a striker likely to be on top of the list of potential targets.
