A season that promised much ended in disappointment yet again for Mainz who finished 13th in the Bundesliga table this season. Mainz had a great first half of the season and looked to be genuine challengers for a European qualification spot. Thomas Tuchel's side were in with a chance of securing qualification to the Champions League at one stage but a dip in form following the winter break ended their hopes of securing their highest ever finish in the Bundesliga. Mainz were sixth in the table when league duties resumed after the winter break but a poor run of just two wins from their final 17 games, including a nine-match winless streak in the end, saw them slip down the league table. Mainz's slide down the table coincided with loss of form of top scorer Adam Szalai who managed to score just four goals since the turn of the year before a neck injury ended his season in April. Tuchel will see it as a major opportunity lost this season to secure a continental qualification and will be aware that he has to improve his side if they are to put up a tougher fight for Europe next campaign. The Mainz coach has a major rebuilding process on his hand this summer in order to replace Jan Kirchhoff who will be leaving the club in the summer along with Andreas Ivanschitz, Marco Caligiuri, Ivan Klasnic and Radoslav Zabavník.
