Football Season Review

№18: Excel Mouscron

Mouscron kicked off the season with a completely new squad, mostly consistent of Lille loanees, and a few journeymen players like Matias Silvestre and Harlem Gnohere. It was a miserable and dreary start under returning manager Fernando Da Cruz and the team looked by far and away the worst in the league for the first couple of months. It was hardly a surprise when he was sacked in October and Portuguese coach Jorge Simao took over. Suddenly, the team started looking a bit more compact and solid at the back, getting a few wins under their belt against direct rivals to give themselves hope in the battle to stay up. Goalie Herve Koffi emerged as one of the consistent key players, making some top saves game after that, while Nuno Da Costa was also excellent in attack and provided threat and movement that mixed nicely with an industrious midfield. Results remained mixed after the turn of the year and at time the Hurlus found it hard to get goals but they always looked compact at the back and remained firmly in the battle to stay up. Yet, a six-game winless run in January and February made it pretty urgent for Simao's men to pick up and seemed like a hard-earned win over Standard could be enough to avoid the bottom spot. However, a few close games ended in narrow defeats in the final month of the season and a 4:2 loss away at Brugge, coupled with a win by Waasland Beveren in their game, meant that Mouscron finish bottom. It felt somewhat harsh on Simao as he really worked hard to improve this team but now Mouscron face an uncertain future as a club, with most of the squad set to leave and the owner also unlikely to continue his investment.
