Football Season Review

№14: KV Kortrijk

Despite finishing very low in the standings Kortrijk actually had very calm campaign that saw them enjoying mid-table comfort all throughout. Only low motivation late on, 5 defeats in last 6, the reason why Kortrijk missed out on the top 10. Yves Vanderhaeghe started the season in charge, but from early on he was unhappy with the owners after star striker Terem Moffi was sold in the summer so Kortrijk secure their financial stability. Without him the Reds expectedly struggled for goals in many games and the consistency was missing from the displays up until Christmas. Still even mix of wins and defeats meant that come 2021 Kortrijk were still in the race for top 8 finish. Some positive moves were made during January too with new signings Radovanovic, Gano and Chevalier all fitting well in the squad and playing important roles for the rest of the season. However, awful 5-game winless run (D1 L4) in January saw Kortrijk losing touch with the play-off positions and coach Vanderhaeghe was sacked after round 23. Luka Elsner took charge straight away with his task made clear – the Board wanted him to start preparing the team for next season with the gap to the top 8 too large to be realistically breached. This saw some experiments with the line-up occurring during the last 10 rounds and this explains why the results were inconsistent, but Kortrijk should have slight advantage next term in that they started building for that campaign early. Ocansey and Selemani showed great versatility throughout the campaign, both were used in 4 different positions during the season. Radovanovic and Gano also played very well since joining in January, but De Sart was never in great form as he had 3 separate spells out injured.
