Football Season Review

№9: Leicester City

Leicester had a decent campaign, but they would rather forget about it after some unexpected dramatic moments throughout. The Foxes started slowly, 5 defeats in the first 9 rounds, which put coach Puel under pressure straight away. Just like a year earlier the main issues were in defence where the overrated Maguire continued to be unreliable, while none of the 3 centre-backs signed in the summer was used much. Come the end of October the club was shaken by a major tragedy with the much-loved Thai owner dying in a helicopter crash right after the 1:1 home draw vs. West Ham in round 10. For months after this tragedy fans, players and staff were healing slowly, but it was a grim period for everyone, and Puel failed to galvanize the team. Eventually after a single win in the first 7 rounds of 2019, Puel was sacked and Leicester stole Celtic’s coach Brendan Rogers for the final 11 rounds of the campaign. His arrival steadied the ship and also saw Vardy hitting top form, 10 goals scored in 11 games under Rodgers, which helped the Foxes to at least finish in the top half of the table. With Rodgers expected to work hard on branding the squad as his own this summer it is hard to know what to expect from Leicester in the future. However, with Vardy now 32-years-old, and many other teams having much better squads, challenging for the top positions seems really unlikely for the Foxes in years to come.
