Football Season Review

№7: Wolverhampton Wanderers

Wolves enjoyed an amazing return to the top flight that was also helped by the fact that throughout the entire length of the season the health of the squad remained excellent, and there were no long-term injury issues to worry about. Using the same philosophy and tactics that earned the promotion, coach Santo and his bunch of young exciting players knew their jobs on the pitch from day one, and Wolves immediately showed everyone they are back in the top flight to stay, with just 1 defeat in the opening 8 rounds. The acquisition of Jimenez to lead the attack proved an excellent move and despite the fact that Wolves preferred to sit deep and play mainly on counterattack, the Mexican was a constant threat and he finished the season with 13 goals and 8 assists. The entire squad played well and with safety pretty much secured as early as February, Wolves were also able to focus on the FA Cup in the spring, which saw them reaching the semi-finals after eliminating Liverpool and Man United on the way. In general Wolves proved to be very effective against the ‘Big Six’ and they earned points against all of the top teams during the campaign. With Europe also on the agenda next term Wolves will need to increase their depth in the summer as they can’t expect to have another injury-free season, and the demands of more games will definitely be a new challenge.

Player of the Season: Raul Jimenez
