Football Season Review

№11: Leyton Orient

It was a disappointing season for Leyton Orient, as a play-off challenge never materialised and they had to settle for a mid-table finish. Ross Embleton had played a vital role for the O’s in steadying the ship following the sad passing of Justin Edinburgh. His brief this time around was to at least challenge for a top seven finish and he looked to have the tools to do so. Danny Johnson had established himself as one of the most lethal finishers in the division; Craig Clay provided the midfield engine and full-back James Brophy was a creative force down the left. Their best player however was experienced midfielder Jobi McAnuff, who led by example. The side didn’t make the best of starts but climbed into the play-off places before Christmas. It was a brief stay and the January transfer window saw a couple of shrewd additions in defender Adam Thompson and midfielder Dan Kemp. Sadly Johnson lost his form and with spring about to bloom, the club cut their losses and Embleton was sacked. McAnuff was given the job until the end of the season and he soon had an impact. They were pushing for the play-offs but a run of four straight defeats brought a disappointing end to the campaign. McAnuff subsequently announced his retirement from playing and isn’t interested in pursing a managerial career. The club are now on the look out for a manager with both League 1 and League 2 experience and he will inherit a decent squad.
