Football Season Review

№18: Oldham Athletic

Abdallah Lemsagam’s ownership at Oldham Athletic continues unabated with a global pandemic making no difference to the continued farce at Boundary Park. One of the attractions has been a revolving door of puppet managers and Harry Kewell was the next to have his strings pulled when he joined last summer. With his reputation battered by failures at Crawley Town and Notts County, he was clearly desperate for another job. Last season’s squad made quick their escape and the latest collection of journeymen and loanees were wheeled in to the building. Kewell has a reputation for teams that like to attack but aren’t so keen on defending and thus the script was written. After 46 league games 72 goals had been scored and 81 had been conceded. There were some impressive performances, striker Conor McAleny bagged 21 goals, attacking midfielders Davis Kellior-Dunn and Dylan Bahamboula scored some spectacular goals whilst Leeds United loanee Alfie McCalmont caught the eye in the middle of the park. No manager has completed a whole season under Lemsagam and Kewell was sacked in March, with the side flirting with a relegation battle. Many will wonder why Keith Curle decided he wanted to have a go in the ejector seat but safety was secured with goals continuing to fly in at both ends. Curle can surely do better than remain a part of this tragicomedy. He will have to completely rebuild the squad again under Lemsagam’s unstable ownership.
