Football Season Review

№14: Stevenage

Stevenage made the most of their reprieve from relegation last season and enjoyed an encouraging campaign which saw them finish in mid-table. Boro’ finished bottom of the Football League last season but Macclesfield Town’s financial woes saw them deducted points and the Hertfordshire side lived to fight another day. They certainly didn’t deserve their luck with owner Phil Wallace making a series of dreadful decisions. However, he finally got one right in the appointment of rookie boss Alex Revell, although the signs weren’t so promising as they made another poor start to the season. Having initially recruited for life in the National League, he had to manage a bloated squad that relied more on quantity than quality. He eventually settled on a first-choice XI, aided by the additions of free-agent Tom Pett and hometown striker Luke Norris in January. Pett established a midfield partnership with Chris Lines whilst Norris dovetailed nicely with Elliott List. List was the standout performer, finishing as leading goalscorer with ten goals. They went unbeaten for a dozen league matches, conceding just four goals in that run. It was a season where Terence Vancooten established himself in the centre of defence whilst Jamie Cumming had a fine season between the sticks on a season-long loan from Chelsea. A season of consolidation was just what Boro’ needed and Revell will be hoping to take his side to next level and challenge for the play-offs next time around.
