Football Season Review

№18: NAC Breda

Just two seasons after their unexpected return to the top flight of the Dutch football in 2017, NAC Breda travel all the way back to the Eerste Divisie courtesy of a disastrous campaign. Their relegation has become reality only after week 32 but the Bredaners actually spent just two weeks (2 and 3) out of the bottom two in the whole season. With 4 wins and 3 draws, NAC were still competitive during the first half of the campaign but things got way worse in the second one, as they won only once, drawing 5 and losing 11. This undoubtedly was a season with no strengths for them. They were the worst hosts and the worst visitors of the campaign, while scoring less goals than any other Eredivisie side, just 29, and holding the worst goal difference, - 45. The January squad changes had no real positive effect on the campaign while even the arrival of Ruud Brood at the end of March, as replacement for coach Mitchell Van der Gaag, who had thrown in the towel, brought them just 2 positive results in a row and nothing more. Brood will be confirmed at the helm but, as NAC rely heavily on loanees from bigger clubs, 14 out of 31 squad players are set to return to their parent clubs, they are bound to change deeply over the summer. An immediate return to the Eredivisie does not seem likely because of that.
