After 2 seasons in the top half of the Eredivisie, SC Heerenveen finished in the 11th spot following a rather troublesome campaign.
They were never really at risk of relegation, but they found themselves flirting with the bottom 3 at the start of the second half of the campaign, when they even fell on the 15th standing, just 1 point away from the playout zone. Coach Jan Olde Riekerink, at his first experience with the club, eventually had to quit, following a defeat to FC Emmen, and was thus replaced by his assistant, Johnny Jansen, who led the ship to safe shores.
SC Heerenveen undoubtedly suffered due to some squad problems as they lost 3 regulars during the campaign, Dave Bulthuis and Arber Zeneli were sold during the winter transfer market while Morten Thorsby was frozen out for some time due to contractual issues. All those players were not properly replaced.
Despite a season characterised by mediocrity, they were the team that drew the most, 11 games, they surprisingly managed to hold the 5th best attack of the league, having scored 64 goals. Their defence, on the other hand, was way too fragile as only 4 teams conceded more than them, who were pierced 73 times.
Jansen might be confirmed at the helm of the team for the new season and he will most likely have to deal with a completely different squad as not many of the protagonists of the current campaign will still be at Heerenveen. More troubles might be waiting for them.
