Football Season Review

№7: Queen's Park

It was a tough season for Queen’s Park, with rookie boss Mark Roberts guiding them to a mid-table finish. Roberts was handed the reins in October, following the surprise departure of Gus MacPherson, who returned to St Mirren as technical director. He failed to keep the amateur side in League One, and Roberts was left with a youthful squad struggling to find their way back in League Two. Injuries played their part too and a winless run of ten games saw them head into the new year peering over their shoulders. The inability of both Albion Rovers and Berwick Rangers to pick up points ensured the Spiders kept their heads above water, and the return of playmaker David Galt helped the side find some form. He notched half-a-dozen goals in 17 games which allowed Roberts to blood a number of talented youngsters in winger Euan East and striker Michael Ruth. Striker Kieran Moore enjoyed a breakthrough season, showing plenty of industry whilst Scott Gibson played a Captain’s role in the centre of defence. Jordan Hart missed just a single league game between the sticks whilst Roberts' son Kurtis was voted player of the season with some dynamic performances in the middle of park, including a goal of the season contender. Roberts is likely to continue with a youthful side again next season and if he can supplement it with some experienced players there’s no reason why they shouldn’t make a challenge for the play-offs.
