A poor end to last season ruined what could have been a promising campaign for Nurnberg, they eventually finished in 12th position but should have been higher up the table. Christian Fiel at least got the team playing some good attacking football, but defensively they were found out too many times. Continuity has been a problem at the club for a number of years with 11 different people having taken on the manager role since early 2019. There will again be a change for the upcoming campaign after Fiel left to take over at Hertha Berlin. Germany’s all-time record goalscorer Miroslav Klose has been appointed new head coach despite still being in his early years of football management. His first gig at Austrian side Altach wasn’t particularly successful, but there is a positivity around the place that the former Bayern Munich and Lazio striker can bring the good times back to the club. Klose has made a lot of changes to the squad during the summer with many new additions and a fair few outgoings too. Keeping young talent Uzun was always going to be difficult after his starring role last season, but they did manage to accumulate a tidy fee from Frankfurt for his services. Due to his big name, Klose looks to have the pull to bring in some quality players that may have otherwise declined. An example of this is defender Robert Knoche from Union Berlin, a consistent performer at the top level, who turned down offers in the Bundesliga to join. Full-back Danilo Soares and winger Florian Pick also bring with them some top-flight experience while centre-back Ondrej Karafiat has played at the top level in the Czech Republic for a number of years. Striker Serra had previous spells at Holstein Kiel and Arminia Bielefeld and will be a handful in the box due to his big frame. The rest of the newbies are hungry youngsters so expect an exciting new look to Nurnberg next season.

Target

It’s difficult to predict how Nurnberg will fare under Klose, but an improvement on last season would be a start. There is certainly enough quality in the squad for a top-half finish but it may take some time for things to settle after many changes.
