Peterborough had a solid last season despite the major financial turmoil that engulfed the club in the first 4 months of the campaign. Between August and October the Posh were tittering on the verge of bankruptcy. Eventually, their substantial debts were extended for future seasons and the atmosphere in the dressing room calmed down. Despite the small squad and the inability to add new players the main core of the team stayed healthy all season. This helped the Posh to a fourth place and play-off appearance. Promotion would have been huge for the financial worries but unfortunately at the first hurdle in the play-offs Ferguson’s men got eliminated by Oxford United 1:2 on aggregate. The time to start repaying the depth has come and this is the reason why all top players were sold this summer. The entire back line was gutted out, with the top goalscorer from last season Mason-Clark and the League One Golden Boot winner from 2 years ago Clarke-Harris also allowed to leave. Most of the money from the outgoing transfers can’t be used as they go to cover the debt. This means Posh have an even smaller and much more inexperienced squad at the start of the new season. With only 3 typical centre-backs on the books, 2 of them with hardly any League One experience, 3 unreliable strikers and a bunch of inexperienced full-backs Peterborough look ill-prepared for the new season. Coach Ferguson hopes to add at least 4-5 others on loan. If he can find gems among them Peterborough should stay out of trouble. However, with the main focus being on covering the debt more players of top quality could be sold in the winter and it seems the Posh will struggle to compete for the play-offs again this season.
