Another disappointing season almost resulted in relegation for Augsburg who managed to do just about enough to secure a 15th place finish for a second successive season.
Augsburg started the season on a promising note, winning two of their opening three games but their form quickly tapered off as they managed to win just two more times until the turn of the year.
Augsburg struggled for consistency as the season progressed but managed to maintain a decent gap from the relegation zone but a dismal run of just one win from six games, which included defeats to fellow relegation strugglers Koln and Schalke, saw them drop uncomfortably close to the bottom three.
Augsburg acted by sacking Heiko Herrlich and reappointing Markus Weinzierl and the change worked to an extent with Augsburg clinching a crucial win against Werder Bremen that was enough to secure their participation in the Bundesliga for another season.
Augsburg continue to be handicapped by recurring problems with Finnbogason continuing to struggle with injuries, which limited him to just four starts, while Niederlechner failed to find the back of the net on a regular basis.
Goals largely came from the midfield with Andre Hahn, Ruben Vargas and Daniel Caligiuri all chipping in with crucial strikes while the latter also led the assists charts.
Options are likely to be limited for Weinzierl as he looks to rebuild the team and Augsburg may once again find it difficult to pull clear of the relegation zone next season and are likely to finish around the bottom three.
