Football Season Review

№5: Eintracht Frankfurt

A brilliant season almost ended with Eintracht Frankfurt qualifying for the Champions League but a dip in form in the final weeks meant they had to settle for a fifth placed finish though it represents their best campaign in near three decades. Frankfurt endured a difficult start to the campaign, winning just three times in the first half of the season which included a nine-match winless streak in the league. An early exit from the DFB Cup followed but results improved dramatically following the winter break with Frankfurt losing just once between January and April to shoot up and consolidate their place in the top four. Key to their success was the attacking combination between Andre Silva, Daichi Kamada and Filip Kostic with the latter two finishing the campaign as the top two creators while Silva led the scoring charts with 28 goals, one ahead of Erling Haaland. A dip in form in the final weeks, which saw them collect just one point from three games, proved to be costly as Frankfurt dropped out of the top four and, despite winning their final game, they had to be satisfied with the fifth place. Frankfurt face a season of transition next year with coach Adi Hutter leaving to take over at Borussia Monchengladbach and the club yet to announce his successor. There are also question marks over Silva's future with a number of clubs reportedly interested in his signature and his presence could be a major factor in whether Frankfurt will be able to challenge once again for a Champions League spot next year.
