It threatened to be another disappointing campaign for Dortmund but they managed to turn things around, claiming third spot in the table and winning the DFB Cup.
The season started with promise with 5 wins from their first 6 games, goals were easy to come by and even defensively they looked a lot more solid, however, this didn’t last.
Poor defeats at home to Koln and Stuttgart eventually saw coach Lucien Favre shown the door in December. Assistant Edin Terzic took on the job until the end of the season and initially struggled to find consistency.
Dortmund fell adrift of the top four places and things were looking bleak in their quest to qualify for the Champions League, however, decent performances in Europe and the DFB Cup helped lift the confidence.
The continuous goals of prolific striker Erling Haaland, coupled with the reemergence of Sancho after injury, helped Dortmund to a strong finish. They went on to win each of their last 7 league games and claimed the DFB Pokal with victory over RB Leipzig.
Dortmund will be looking to build on their strong finish and take that into next season. Marco Rose has already been appointed to take charge and will get to work in the summer. If he can keep what is already a talented squad together and add a few additions defensively, they should get back to challenging for the title.
