Basaksehir failed to earn a spot for the Champions League’s Qualifiying round unlike the previous season, but they managed to be successful in stretching the recent year’s stability. In Europa League, they missed the next round with a small difference.
The early fixtures showed that coach Abdullah Avci’s team struggled to cope with the heavy schedule. The fans could see their team record only five victories in the initial fifteen official games. It was clear that they generally gave more importance to the Super League after they were kicked out of the Champions League. However, they could not manage to build a long streak in the league because of their unstable away run.
Comparing to the previous season, they lost many points on the road. They were also unable to get efficiency from their summer arrivals except Gael Clichy, who was the regular who played the most, and Eljero Elia, who produced 8 goals and 5 assists. Chedjou faced a serious injury before the season’s kick off and Da Costa was also unable to meet the expectations. That is why the coach had to use Attamah as a center-back. Tunay Torun could get a few chance and Kerim Frei & Gokhan Inler could not go further than being support players. Once again, Edin Visca and Emmanuel Adebayor produced 31 goals & 21 assists totally.
Had Basaksehir not suffered some surprise defeats on the road as they did against the relegated duo Karabuk and Genclerbirligi, they would have celebrated their first title ever. Even if they had obtained just one point against one of them, they would have played in the Champions League’s qualifiying round. So being serious from the season’s kick-off is a must for them next season. Some players like captain Emre have lost their rhythm. The coach needs to have enough alternatives in order to be successful in all three competitions.
