It has been another disappointing season for the Black Sea Region side considering their club target. Coach Riza Calimbay helped Trabzon finish fifth in the Super League which was not enough to earn a spot in the Europa League after Akhisar won the Turkish Cup.
They kicked off the season with coach Ersun Yanal in charge, but he could save his job for only two months, collecting only eight points in nine games. The board found his replacement quickly and coach Riza Calimbay was appointed.
Under his charge, the team offered a great display in the initial months, dropping just once in seven games. This performance brought them to the European Cups zone from the border of the relegation zone. They failed to kick off the season’s 2nd part well as they were unable to taste a victory in the first five games. They lost many points at home, especially against upper teams. These results prevented them from building a steady run. During this period, the coach also lost a reputable amount of credit among the fans. Their late efforts enabled them to finish in the 5th place, but nobody liked it. That is why the board parted company with the coach.
Since the 2010/11 season, they offered their best offensive performance with 69 goals. Burak Yilmaz was the biggest factor for that. Besides him, the Academy products like Abdulkadir Omur and Yusuf Yazici have offered great performances. Some big clubs from Europe have already showed their interests on the duo. It seems like it will be difficult to keep them in the club for the next season. If they cannot, they should receive a great amount of financial sources in order to build the next season’s squad.
No doubt that the summer will be active for Trabzon. First of all, they need to bring a new coach and then find some fresh blood to cope with the possible departures.
