Football Season Review

№17: Genclerbirligi

Genclerbirligi's 32-year Super League adventure came to an end with coach Umit Ozat being appointed twice during the season. According to the authorities, it was sort of expected following the death of their legendary club president, because the club was not run properly without him. In particular, the foreign players transfer policy did not provide benefit in general. They were unable to make a good start, collecting only one point in the initial four games. That is why the board made a change on the bench and replaced coach Umit Ozat with coach Mesut Bakkal, but he was also unable to meet the expectations. When he was fired, the capital city side were standing at the bottom of the league. The board decided to appoint coach Umit Ozat again two months later, because he had built the squad and he was the only person who could make things better. Although this decision was welcomed well by the fans, they built a 10-game undefeated league run which enabled them to go five points clear off the danger zone. They could not stretch it any more and started to suffer bad results again. Game by game, their survival belief decreased. That is why they could never be successful in the decisive fixtures. No doubt that the summer will be very difficult for them. The former coach blamed some players because of their unprofessional behaviours. Besides that, the fans were not happy of the quality of the team and some players are not willing to play in the 1st League. The board also need to find a coach who knows the team and the league well. If they manage to take the right decisions, they can return to the top level soon.
