Football Season Review

№21: Doncaster Rovers

Doncaster Rovers boss Sean O’Driscoll was left a frustrated man for much of the season as his first team squad was constantly hamstrung with injuries to key members of the side. Following a relatively solid start to the season Donny looked more likely to be threatening the top six than the bottom three. But it appeared to go downhill for Rovers when leading scorer Billy Sharp succumbed to a hernia problem which required surgery and a three-month lay-off. A lack of goals in the final third of the campaign saw Doncaster drift alarmingly towards the relegation zone and going into the Easter period O’Driscoll’s men still needed points to secure their Championship status. After avoiding defeat to relegation rivals Crystal Palace, securing valuable points at home to neighbours Barnsley and big-spending Leicester eventually proved more than enough. O’Driscoll will be looking forward to playing his full strength side at the beginning of 2011/12 with the likes of James Coppinger, Brian Stock and John Oster well capable of providing the ammunition for a fully-fit Sharp next term.
