Football Season Review

№12: Gillingham

Gillingham have had a reasonably successful season, as they managed to secure their survival in League One with several games to spare. It seemed for a long time that things would be different for the Gills, as they spent the majority of the first half of the season hovering dangerously close to the drop zone and even found themselves inside the bottom four on a couple of occasions. It did not take long for the atmosphere at their ground to become rather toxic, as their fans were usually quick to voice their displeasure with Peter Taylor's long ball footballing philosophy. Taylor eventually paid for his lack of style and results with his job, and the Gills opted to replace him with Justin Edinburgh, who joined from Newport County following a protracted saga, as his former club were unwilling to let the Gills hold talks with him. The decision to replace Taylor with Edinburgh has been justified by the second half of the season that the Gills have had, as they improved in terms of both results and playing style. It even looked like they would be able to post an unlikely play-off push at one point, but they were ultimately unable to maintain the form they had been showing during Edinburgh's honeymoon period and had to settle for a midtable finish. It currently certainly seems that foundations are being set for the Gills to challenge for a higher finish next season, and they could become rather serious play-off candidates if they shop wisely during the summer and manage to keep the core of their side together.
