Football Season Review

№24: Yeovil Town

Yeovil are coming from a dreadful campaign that ended in their second successive relegation. The Glovers, who spent the 2013/14 season playing in the Championship for the first time in their history, started the season that is now behind us with shy hopes of winning a return ticket to the second tier. However, it soon became clear that their dreams were unrealistic, as they badly struggled from the get-go, especially at Huish Park, as they managed to win only once in their opening twelve home games. It was not long before Gary Johnson became very open about his belief that his time at the club was coming to an end, and his words proved prophetic, as he was sacked in early February. The club board made the decision to replace him with club legend and his former assistant Terry Skiverton and, despite winning his first game in charge, the former central defender never brought significant improvements, as the Glovers continued to struggle and were relegated with as many as five games to spare. The Glovers made another managerial change near the end of the season, as they signed Paul Sturrock, who was brought in late in the season in order to have a chance to assess the squad and start preparing for life in League Two. The Glovers did show signs of life under their new boss and had some decent results late in the campaign, but it will be a completely different story next season, as they will be under pressure to deliver and try to return straight to League Two. Being a former non-league club with a small fan base, the Glovers were widely seen as a club punching above its weight over the recent years, and it is now up to them to prove the doubters wrong and show that League One is indeed their true level.
