Football Season Review

№5: Wigan Athletic

It was a roller-coaster return to The Championship for Wigan Athletic this season. The Latics began the 2013/14 season under the managership of former boss, Owen Coyle, who had designs on taking the Lancashire side back to the top flight at the first attempt. Unfortunately, despite an encouraging start to the season at Barnsley on the opening day, Wigan's Europa League commitments thwarted them from gaining any kind of momentum in the domestic league. Coyle was subsequently fired late last year and replaced with Brentford boss, Uwe Rosler. The fiery German boss transformed matters in the league for Wigan, with a barnstorming run over the Christmas and New Year period fired them into top six contention. The depth of their playing squad was a major aid to their playoff bid, with two top keepers in Ali Al-Habsi and Scott Carson fighting it out, and the likes of Nicky Maynard, Martyn Waghorn, Callum McManaman and Marc-Antoine Fortune in attack. Wigan eventually secured fifth place and a playoff semi with QPR. The Latics could only manage a draw in the first leg on home soil and were eventually dumped out in the second leg after extra time. Rosler's men will regroup and could go one better next year with the aid of further parachute payments.
