Football Season Review

№19: Millwall

Millwall successfully avoided relegation to League One thanks to a late revival in the closing stages of the season. The Lions ended up finishing four points clear of the drop zone after an eight-match unbeaten run including the final day of the campaign when a 1-0 home win over Bournemouth confirmed their place in the second tier for next year. Boss, Ian Holloway took quite some time to get to grips with his squad after taking the reins of the club over the festive period. Holloway's arrival was due to the failure of former boss, Steve Lomas, who was unable to energise the squad following the departure of long-serving boss, Kenny Jackett. But Holloway appears to have the charisma and personality to drive Millwall forward and make The New Den a fortress and a place to be feared once again. Holloway completely rebuilt the Lions' midfield with Ed Upson, Owen Garvan and Shaun Williams coming into the side in January and impressing greatly. Meanwhile target man, Stefan Maierhofer also proved an unlikely hero, popping up with some dramatic goals during that eight-match run. But it is keeper, David Forde who has often been the hero for Millwall. The Republic of Ireland keeper is out of contract in the summer and may be considering a big-money move elsewhere at the age of 33 and in his goalkeeping prime. Holloway has breathed new life into the club and they are unlikely to be battling to avoid the drop next term.
