Football Season Review

№9: Ipswich Town

Mick McCarthy's Ipswich Town were forced to settle for a solid top 10 finish this season after coming so close to gatecrashing the Championship playoff places. The Suffolk side were in pole position to take the coveted fourth and final playoff spot over the Easter weekend but a couple of disappointing results saw them move out of any realistic reckoning. Regardless of that disappointment it was a tremendous improvement on seasons gone by for the Tractor Boys. Town were not forced to look over their shoulder at the bottom three for any part of the season and they have a platform to build on now for 2014/15. The goals of David McGoldrick in the first half of the season were crucial for Ipswich. Had the former Forest striker not picked up a knee injury in early February, the Blues may have stood an even better chance of sneaking into the top six. Defensively, Ipswich were one of the best organised sides in the division, but McCarthy will know he needs to recruit some pace and creativity in the midfield region if they are to go one further next term and become genuine promotion contenders. Left back, Aaron Cresswell continues to be linked with top flight clubs and could be sold in the summer to fund any incoming deals.
