Football Season Review

№23: Barnsley

Barnsley have battled to avoid the drop for many seasons now and 2013/14 saw their luck run out as they finally succumbed to League One. Danny Wilson was appointed halfway through the season to take over from the fired David Flitcroft, but Wilson - in his second spell in charge at Oakwell - was unable to arrest the Tykes' decline. Barnsley had one of the smaller budgets in the division and have been successfully punching above their weight for a number of years. At times it looked like they had the capabilities to avoid relegation with striker, Chris O'Grady their key weapon with 15 league goals to his name. However, it was at the other end of the pitch where the real problems lay. The Tykes conceded 77 goals - the highest figure in the division and this ultimately proved their undoing. They also failed to turn Oakwell into the fortress it has been over the last few seasons and the South Yorkshire side eventually finished five points from safety. Relegation may be a chance for the Tykes to clear the decks and give some of their promising youngsters a platform to develop in a new era.
