The 2023/24 season was a turbulent one for Millwall. Having flirted with making the play-offs in previous campaigns under Gary Rowett, the club parted ways with the pragmatic coach in October and tried a complete change in philosophy by giving Joe Edwards his first senior management role. The young coach attempted to implement a more progressive style of play but it failed to garner results with just four wins from his tenure (W4 D4 L11). The club ripped up the script again and went back to basics by re-hiring club legend Neil Harris for another stint in charge at the Den. The Lions had become too tame under Edwards and Harris in his own words brought back the “gritty, horrible” side that no one looked forward to playing against. The football was far from pretty but it was certainly effective. Harris led Millwall to eight wins from thirteen matches (W8 D2 L3), including five straight victories to end the campaign, comfortably romping to safety. Harris will remain at the helm and the club are looking to ride the momentum he was able to cook up with some notable moves in the transfer market. Japhet Tangana’s loan from Premier League giants Tottenham has been made permanent and he will look to be lynchpin in the defence. Up front, the club have taken a gamble on Macaulay Langstaff who has been one of the most prolific goalscorers in the lower leagues for years now. Unfortunately, the club has suffered yet another tragedy. Having lost chairman John Berylson in a car accident before the start of last season, first choice goalkeeper Matija Sarkic tragically passed away in the summer at the age of just 26. The Lions will again have to show their famed resilience in the face of adversity.

Target

Avoiding another relegation battle is the bare minimum. A challenge for the play-offs would be the dream.
