Football Season Review

№9: Brentford

This is a season where Brentford's ambitions were really checked. Having made the play-offs last term they made the extraordinary decision to part company with Mark Warburton. Marinus Dijkhuizen took over but quickly proved out of his depth at this level. There was certainly a mismatch of ideas as Lee Carsley then became head coach. He worked wonders and really turned the club's fortunes around. But then he opted to part company with the club who then appointed Dean Smith as new boss. In the end they will be delighted by the end of season form, that saw them finish 9th, thanks largely to the influence of Scott Hogan who returned from injury in style. Much could depend on Hogan next term. The loss though of Alan Judge, regarded as the club's talisman to a broken leg late in the campaign is bound to hit the Bees going into the new season. It is a big summer for Dean Smith to finally exert full control in the form of new signings.
