Football Season Review

№5: Derby County

Another season of failure for Derby given the quality of players at their disposal. There appears to be a difference of ideas with Steve McClaren signing players last summer before he was sacked, successor Paul Clement having different ideas and then Darren Wassall, who took charge for the rest of the season, having different thoughts altogether. Either way the Rams' season ended in the play-off semi-final to Hull after a woeful 3-0 home loss and a spirited 2-0 victory in the return was too little, too late. Their squad of 29 players is way too big and there was confusion when they carried on spending in January with Nick Blackman coming from Reading but barely getting a look in. Derby now must decide who gets the manager's job now with Wassall likely to take a back seat. This was a season of bitter disappointment but there were a few positives, especially the form of Richard Keogh who regained the captain's armband after being stripped of it last summer when Clement came in.
