Football Season Review

№10: Brighton and Hove Albion

Brighton and Hove Albion enjoyed a successful first season back in the second tier under the leadership of Uruguayan, Gus Poyet. The Seagulls flirted with the playoff places for much of the season, but tailed off in the latter stages of the calendar to finish in a more than respectable 10th place. The hysteria and joy of Albion's new ground, the Amex Stadium, ensured a vociferous and highly-charged atmosphere at every home game. Subsequently it is no surprise that Brighton's home record was the primary reason behind their playoff charge with just four defeats on home soil. A lack of goals away from home proved their undoing, with Poyet unable to find the magic formula to pick up three points away from the Amex on a regular basis and keep pace with the front runners. Nevertheless there was plenty of excitement for the Albion faithful over the course of the season. Club record signing, Craig Mackail-Smith chipped in with his fair share of goals along with strike partner Ashley Barnes. Meanwhile the autumn arrival of Spanish ace, Vicente added an extra dimension to their attacking play. If Poyet remains at the club next season and has the funds to strengthen they could certainly be top six candidates in 2012/13.
