Football Season Review

№6: Cardiff City

Cardiff City had a new manager in Malky Mackay this season but once again they failed to achieve their aim. A disastrous 5-0 aggregate play-off defeat to West Ham United ended their campaign in the worst possible way after they had just about held on to 6th place. They should arguably have beaten Liverpool in the League Cup final, losing on penalties after missing a couple of good chances in the game. The gruelling nature of that cup run and indeed that match hindered the Bluebirds’ promotion push with many of their players exhausted. A lack of options in attack with highly rated Kenny Miller managing just 11 goals also contributed towards a disappointing season in an attacking sense. Peter Whittingham once again had a promising season and his 13 strikes from midfield got Miller and co out of jail. Cardiff incredibly drew 11 of their 23 away matches. They did not quite have the winning mentality throughout the whole season to bring about success. Mackay will need to sign more offensive players in the summer if they are to at last achieve their goal of promotion to the top flight.
